Don’t Breathe is a gameplay mechanic featured in The Quarry.

Description[]

In most situations where the player has to hide or stay still, players will have to follow some prompts to stay hidden. When the player starts the segment, they have to hold (X) (Playstation) or (A) (XBOX) and hold it there until the threat goes away. The threat’s presence is sensed by the red mist at the side of the screen, signaling the player that they are near and to not let go of the button yet until they are gone. There is also a timer present, which determines how long the player can breathe for. If it expires and the player still holds their breath, the segment is failed. However, the threat is usually gone before the timer expires. When the red mist is gone, it is safe to let go of the button. On more difficult segments, it is advised to wait until the button prompt to hold the button ALMOST expires, and then hold it and wait, giving the player more time to breathe.

Usually, in most cases, failing the segment will result in a protagonist’s death or a different path being taken. But in some cases, it does not result in heavy consequences.

Kaitlyn Kaitlyn hides from Caleb. The chase continues. Caleb kills Kaitlyn (and Dylan, if present), unless they are infected.
