The Quarry Wiki

Welcome to the show.... it's exciting! Yes, and terrifying....

— Eliza

Eliza Vorez is the overarching antagonist and narrator in The Quarry, known in legends and stories as the Hag of Hackett's Quarry. Between chapters, she offers to read the player's future through tarot cards. She was voiced and motion captured by Grace Zabriskie.

Personality[]

Apathetic, spiteful and dismissive, Eliza is shown to be indifferent - and sometimes even downright hateful - over the characters of the story. Despite this, she does seem to show some enthusiasm in telling the player the game's story, and even more so if the player manages to find her tarot cards, which are collectables scattered around different areas of the game. When the player reaches an interaction with Eliza without finding any cards, she will grow annoyed and disappointed.

Eliza's disposition and role in the story become more apparent as the game goes on, showing disgust toward anyone against her son. If a character dies, Eliza will be completely apathetic to them, often referring to many characters as "vermin" that need to be "stamped out".

Seeing as the Hackett family are determined to eliminate Silas, and by extension, the werewolf curse that Silas started, she shows the most hatred toward them. Because of this, Eliza will show an elated and grateful side when killing someone from the Hackett family.

Failing to reach Silas at the end of the game with most of the Hackett family being killed will elicit a happy response from Eliza, praising the player for their actions and glad that she put her trust in them. If Silas is killed, or came close to being killed, but the player failed, Eliza will be furious, threatening to haunt the player forever. If Silas wasn't reached, but one member of the Hackett family is alive, she will be neutral to the player, warning them to never enter Hackett's Quarry again.

The Quarry[]

Eliza first appears in her ghostly form in the Prologue, sitting in the backseat of Laura and Max's car as they are crashing.

During the tarot readings, Eliza establishes herself as the player's friend and tries to manipulate them into wiping out the Hackett family. She becomes more gleeful if the player's choices cause members of the Hackett family to die, and conversely, she is angrier with the player if the choices leave them extant. This attitude will be seen no matter what choice in the game, as she will remark "Well, there's one less vermin in the world" after Kaylee's death.

Relationships[]

Silas[]

Eliza is the mother of Silas, "The Dog Boy". Although she kept Silas locked in a cage and displayed him as apart of her traveling freakshow, Eliza cared deeply for her son. Even after her death, Eliza continued to protect Silas, attempting to influence the player into making choices that will lead to him surviving the night's events.

Epilogue[]

  • If Silas is killed at the game's end, Eliza will hatefully curse the player, swearing to haunt them as punishment for killing her son.
  • If the player reaches Silas but fails to kill him, she will still be bitter that her son was under threat, swearing to haunt them for trying to kill her son.
  • If Silas is never found, but at least one member of the Hacketts is alive, she will show disappointment in the player for failing to wipe out the Hackett family, warning the player never to step foot into Hackett's Quarry.
  • If Silas is never found, Travis and Chris are dead, she will gleefully praise the player and thank them for doing what she desired. This is the only ending where she is happy and won't curse or threaten the player.

Quotes[]

Eliza: "This is what might come to pass.... a possible future, a path yet unchosen...."

Trivia[]

  • Eliza is an example of an unreliable narrator.
  • The name Vorez, especially how the name is pronounced by Travis, reminds of Voorhees. Possibly making the name a reference to the Friday the 13th film series. One can also consider the name a playoff of the word "vore," which means "to devour," which seems fitting for Silas to share that surname.
    • Additionally, Eliza and Pamela Voorhees are very similar in the role they play in their respective stories. Both are vengeful mothers of the main antagonist who are consumed with vengeance after their sons have been wronged.
  • Eliza Vorez and Kaylee Hackett are the only characters who die regardless of the player's actions.
  • In the tradition of Supermassive's horror titles, Eliza is the narrator of the story in The Quarry, along with Dr. Hill from Until Dawn and the Curator from The Dark Pictures Anthology.
