But even if they have problems such as that Max's friendly, humble, and unwavering loyalty colliding with Laura's hardheaded, curious but resourceful nature make them a humorous pair that deeply care for each other.

Throughout the prologue, they can agree with each other in desperate times or listen to another's warning but they can also keep arguing and act defiant, their loyalty is tested during the most roughest of times, and how they act can drastically change their relationship.

Max and Laura car ride

Max and Laura moments before the crash

Laura and Max are seen driving on the road, Laura tells Max that they are lost to which they both briefly joke about and laugh off. At one point, she notices that he is not paying attention to the road, and reminds him to do so – at this moment they notice an unknown figure sitting on the road, and swerve to avoid it, ending up crashing in the surrounding woods.

Max asks Laura if she is okay and she replies saying she is, Max goes out and checks the vehicle while Laura stays inside then asks him if everything is ok to which he tells her about how the car is really "effed up". Max tells Laura to get the toolbox for him and she complies. When Laura gives Max the toolbox, he and Laura begin to joke about what to do when they arrive at camp.

Laura later goes to check on something she saw while looking at the surrounding area but Max tells her to wait because he's almost done, Laura briefly talks with Max about what he said and she later goes anyway. While exploring and finding clues, she starts to hear strange noises around her then runs back to Max.

After seeing another ghostly figure directly behind Max, they both decide to get back into the car. However, when Max fails to start the car momentarily, they both start to argue on what Laura saw while exploring and their argument intensifies when Max was able to start the car but can't move backwards because of the traction. Travis shows up shortly after, and uses a tow cable to get them back on the road. Travis will then ask what happened and what they are doing in the area late at night.

Max and Laura ignore the sheriff's advice

Laura can either avoid the question, claim that she thought the figure was an animal, or tell the truth. After another unsettling conversation, he can give them advice to head straight to a nearby motel; they may ignore this advice and go to the summer camp instead. At the seemingly abandoned camp, she will realize that sending a voicemail is not the same as calling ahead and Max gets upset over this but soon apologizes about his attitude . She can then visit an ominous set of yellow doors located in a concrete structure, seeing the same figure they saw on the road behind the doors but thinking that it's a person who needs to be rescued.

She can then be joined by Max but briefly expresses annoyance on how he only brought wrenches and a hammer instead of the toolbox. They succeed in opening the doors then explore the structure and potentially find a recently eaten corpse inside, with a discarded collar next to it.

Max may be attacked at this point by a monster, and Laura has the option to either leave him or save him. If she tries to save him, he will be dragged away anyway; Travis will then sedate her with a syringe and fire his pistol into the bunker.
